Volunteering in America Report Released June 15, 2010 - The Corporation for National and Community Service announced that during 2009 volunteerism experienced the greatest increase since 2003--even as the economic crisis continues to test the nation. Last year, 63.4 million Americans volunteered to help communities across the United States--an additional 1.6 million volunteers compared to 2008. The Report reveals that between 2006 and 2009, 231,000 volunteers in the Tulsa area gave 22.5 million hours of service per year, an estimated economic impact of $468.2 million. Of the 75 mid-size cities, Tulsa had an average volunteer rate of 31.4% compared to the national average 26.5%, and 30.6 service hours annually per resident. Emergency Operations Call Center As a partner in Tulsa County Emergency Operations Plan, Volunteer Central of Greater Tulsa will activate the Emergency Operations Call Center to triage needs of responding organizations and to connect spontaneous unaffiliated volunteers interested and able to assist in the event of an emergency or disaster—similar to the December 2007 ice storm. Call 918.447.1888 if you are: Organizations taking part in emergency/disaster response and that need volunteers Citizens who are able and available--those not already involved as first responders or certified in emergency response--to learn how and where to help.
